Object of the Month – May 2012

Object of the Month – May 2012

A scarecrow, part of the Herts Visual Arts Forum Textile Group’s exhibition which is currently on at Mill Green in the grounds of the mill and museum, and also in Gallery 1 of the museum.

The exhibition features lots of colourful pieces of work produced by the group.  Their exhibition is called “Weather or Not” and is focussed on the effect of weather on textiles.

The textiles are being tested by the huge amount of rain we’ve been getting lately!  The textile pieces are actually surviving well even on open display in the garden, as they have obviously been very well put together.

The exhibition runs until the 24 June 2012 and is open on Tuesdays-Thursdays 10am-5pm and on Sundays and bank Holidays 2-5pm.

Statues at Welwyn Roman Baths, which were produced by Paul Bainbridge.

The picture above shows the statue of Tony Rook who discovered the Roman villa (Dicket Mead), directed its excavation and was responsible for the preservation of its baths (Welwyn Roman Baths).  The picture below shows the statue of Mike Heasman, one of the many volunteers who excavated the villa and bath-house site.

Today, the bath-house is the only bit of the Dicket Mead villa which can be seen.  The site is open to visitors on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays 2-5pm.  It is also open 2-5pm everyday in Hertfordshire School Holidays.  Admission £2.50 for adults, children are free.

This is a photograph of Chucks Bakery as it used to be at 8 Dellsome Lane, Welham Green.  The side flue oven, baker’s peels and dough troughs were all donated to the museum then the bakery closed.  The bakery existed from 1890-1960.

At the back of the mill we currently have a display of bakery equpiment including items from Chucks Bakery.

One of the more bizarre objects in our collection is this Welwyn Garden City Toilet Pan c. 1926.  Donated by a local couple, this ceramic buff coloured lavatory pan features the well-known stamp of the Garden City.  It is originally from a property in Elmwood in the Garden City.

This wooden peg doll dates to around 1914.  Doll is sculpted in 8 pieces which have been slotted together and the arms are moveable.  It is currently dressed in a lovely policeman’s uniform which was kindly made by one of our volunteers and the Treasurer of our Museum friends orgnisation, Chris Wilding.  It was made last year for a Beatrix Potter themed exhibition.
